For individuals

Why hire a Career Coach?

Whether you are a teen trying decide what subjects to take at high school, a school leaver wondering what to do next, a tertiary student looking for your first job or a stay-at-home-parent returning to the workforce; if you are new, or recently returned to New Zealand and don’t know what the job market is like or how to find a job here; if you have been made redundant and are facing the prospect of job hunting for the first time in years, or are a job hunter and need help with your applications and/or interview preparation; if you have been feeling aimless in your work-life or you have simply had enough of your present career but are unsure what else you can or might want to do, a career coach can help you find your direction and figure out how you’re going to get there.

How does it work?

If you're in a situation where you have no idea what to do or where you’re going with your career, we'll work together through a series of conversations and exercises to look at your dreams, interests, personality and personal situation to discover your options, set goals and make concrete plans to achieve them. As career and life are very much intertwined I take a holistic approach to include general life coaching and goal setting which often gives clarity to career ideas and direction.

What if I just want help with my CV and job applications?

Job hunting can be a daunting process. It's estimated only 20% of jobs are advertised. I can advise on appropriate recruitment agencies to approach for your job search, show you how to widen your job search beyond advertised positions, how best to present yourself and your knowledge, skills and abilities in your CV and application letters, and prepare you for the interview process - including practice interviews.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on you! The minimum number of sessions you would need are two – that would be the case if for example, you just need some help with your CV and job applications or some job interview practice. Anything else depends on where you're at in your career and life direction. Most people will find 4-6 sessions are sufficient however some people do have more.

How often do we meet?

That depends on you. At the end of each session you will have 'homework' to do – that could include completing exercises, doing some research, job application preparation or just some thinking. We will agree on our next meeting time at the end of each session.

For organisations undergoing restructure. Provide your outgoing employees with practical support to help them through the difficult redundancy process. Workshops can include change and stress management, coping with redundancy, CV writing and interview preparation, how to widen the job search beyond advertised positions and recruitment agency contacts. Individual coaching programmes can also be offered in addition to group workshops.

High School Groups

Career planning workshops are available for students and parents. For students we'll work through some resources to help you figure out what you want to do when you leave school and how to plan your future career, including your high school subject choices. For parents I offer practical tips on how you can help and support your teen as they prepare for their future. Workshops are available to Waikato schools and private groups of parents and students. Ideally the workshops are aimed at Year 10 students before they start making NCEA subject choices however the content is appropriate for teens of all ages.
